Given the rapid development of technologies, including AI, the future of the interpreting (and translation) profession seems to be bleak. A stronger role of professional associations in defending the profession might be beneficial in such circumstances. This would require efforts beyond their regular work, like a stronger focus on continuous updating of professional and ethical standards, and ensuring compliance in the market, but not only that. The key might be in a stronger role of professional associations in education: raising awareness of the public (and clients) and training their members, but most importantly, making meaningful links with university courses for interpreters
