New technologies that have contributed to the rapid spread of remote interpreting in the last five years pose many health risks that are often overlooked. In addition to their typical cognitive and multi-tasking efforts (including working on multiple electronic devices simultaneously), interpreters are now facing direct effects of emerging technologies, which could have an even more severe impact on the future of our profession than the much lauded and feared AI. If we do not want to drown in the “new reality”, we must become aware of these risks and mitigate them.
